The course will seek to provide guidance and support on the proposed changes to the asylum system. Setting out the changes proposed by the government in November 2025 and updating on responses and changes as these proposals are discussed and potentially brought into force.
The course will cover:
- Restructuring of refugee status which claims to be 'entirely in accordance with our international obligations but does not exceed them' (https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/asylum-and-returns-policy-statement/restoring-order-and-control-a-statement-on-the-governments-asylum-and-returns-policy) including the introduction or 'core protection' and a 20 year route to settlement
- Introduction of 'Protection Work and Study' and 'earned' settlement
- Removals from the UK - increased removal rather than 'automatic' settlement
- Changes to asylum support - including changing from a mandatory to a discretionary duty to offer support.
- Overhaul of asylum appeals - including creating a new appeals body.
- Reinterpretation of Article 3
- Limits on the ability to make further applications based on Human Rights grounds
- Introduction of new safe and legal routes to the UK
