Expertise

I provide expert analysis on all five Refugee Convention grounds: political opinion, religion, ethnicity, membership of a particular social group (including LGBT and gender-based cases), and nationality with focus on the following countries:

Albania:
Blood feuds (gjakmarrja), gender-based violence, domestic abuse, political targeting, and police complicity in trafficking. Persecution of LGBT individuals, Roma communities, and religious converts (particularly former Muslims converting to Christianity or atheism). Victims of criminal networks face high risk upon return.

Kosovo:
Ongoing ethnic and religious tensions between Albanians and Serbs. Attacks on journalists, political opponents, and civil society activists. High levels of domestic violence, gender-based discrimination, and insufficient state protection for religious minorities.

North Macedonia:
Ethnic and religious discrimination, especially against Albanian Muslims and Roma communities. Political corruption, weak judiciary, suppression of dissent, and systemic failure to protect women, religious minorities, and LGBT persons.

Serbia:
Political surveillance, targeting of opposition members and independent journalists. Ethnic discrimination against Bosniaks (Muslims) and Albanians. Threats to religious minorities, including converts and smaller Christian groups. Reports of police violence and lack of adequate protection for minorities.

Bosnia and Herzegovina:
Discrimination against ethnic and religious minorities, particularly Bosniaks (Muslims), Orthodox Serbs, and Catholic Croats in ethnically mixed areas. Threats against journalists and human rights defenders. Gender-based violence and weak institutional protection persist, especially for rural communities.
