Conservative MP for Esher and Walton, Dominic Raab, has tabled amendments to the Crime and Courts Bill, due to be debated at Report stage from today.

Raab says he wants to introduce proper safeguards to protect innocent British citizens from deportation under UK extradition law - either to the US or EU.

A second proposal by Raab is a nine word amendment that would ensure foreign criminals jailed for a year or more can be deported without them claiming family and social ties to block their removal under Article 8 of the European Convention on Human Rights.

Raab argues that it is perverse that it has become so difficult to remove such serious criminals, and yet so easy to extradite UK nationals without substantiating any evidence or charges against them.

You can read Raab's article in the Sunday Telegraph here for more.

Adam Wagner has blogged about Raab's proposals on the UK Human Rights Blog here. Wagner says that Raab's "[simple] nine words are likely to set up a highly significant clash between the courts and Parliament, leading to a potentially nuclear confrontation with Strasbourg."
