Successful representation of Albanian asylum claims (FREE)

This is a free legal seminar aimed at legal practitioners about how to successfully run Albanian asylum cases.

Speakers will include Ronan Toal and Claudia Neale of Garden Court Chambers, and Alice Garrod of Islington Law Centre. Young Immigration Champions will also share their experiences as asylum seekers.

Recent government policies intentionally reduced the grant rate for Albanian asylum seekers at first instance. Despite Albania being recognised as a major source country for human trafficking, Albanians now also face increased challenges in gaining recognition as victims of modern slavery. Yet increasingly they were among the most successful nationalities in bringing asylum appeals, with more than 60% of such challenges succeeding in 2024. This seminar will focus on how and why legal representatives should run Albanian asylum initial applications and appeals, and how to work with young asylum seekers and victims of trafficking to achieve the best possible outcome.

This event is being held in partnership between Shpresa and the Migrant and Refugee Children's Legal Unit (based at Islington Law Centre) who work together on Breaking the Chains project, with support from Garden Court Chambers.

The project works with Albanian children and young people in the asylum system, providing them with high quality casework while listening to and amplifying their voices to share learning about how best to protect this vulnerable group.

Tickets are available to attend either online or in person but we strongly recommend you come in person for the best experience!
