Expertise

I provide expert analysis on all five Refugee Convention grounds: political opinion, religion, ethnicity, membership of a particular social group (including LGBT and gender-based cases), and nationality, with a focus on Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, Paraguay, and Brazil.

This includes:

  • State and paramilitary violence against political activists, indigenous leaders, and land defenders.
  • Discrimination and criminalisation of Afro-descendants, Guarani, Mapuche, and other indigenous peoples.
  • Gender-based violence, systemic impunity, and threats against women’s rights defenders.
  • Targeting of LGBT individuals, including hate crimes, forced displacement, and denial of legal protection.
  • Religious discrimination in rural regions and against non-Catholic communities.
  • Arbitrary detention, police brutality, and repressive laws against protest movements.
  • Statelessness, lack of documentation, and barriers to return for deportees and undocumented migrants.
  • Corruption, collusion, and failure of protection institutions in violence-affected regions.
  • Exposure to political persecution or retribution for whistleblowers, journalists, or those perceived as dissidents.

Experience
  • Preparation of expert witness reports for asylum, immigration, and human rights cases.
  • Provision of oral testimony before courts and tribunals.
  • Verification and authentication of documents and country-specific evidence.
  • Conducting nationality assessments, including statelessness evaluations.
  • Author of regional research and publications on human rights violations in the Southern Cone.
  • Contributor to national reports and NGO briefings on police violence, transitional justice, and structural racism.
  • Expert member of The Human Rights Experts.
