Expertise

I provide expert analysis on all five Refugee Convention grounds — political opinion, religion, ethnicity, membership of a particular social group (including LGBT and gender-based cases), and nationality — with a focus on the following countries:

Syria:
Widespread persecution by Assad regime and other armed actors. Arbitrary arrests, torture, and forced conscription. Persecution of Sunni activists, Christians, Kurds, and returnees. High risk for women, LGBT persons, and human rights defenders.

Iraq:
Ethnic and sectarian violence targeting Sunnis, Shias, Kurds, Yazidis, Christians, and political dissidents. Risks from militias, ISIS remnants, and corrupt security forces. Gender-based and honour-based violence remain prevalent.

Iran:
Systematic persecution of Baha’is, Christians, Sunni Muslims, women, LGBT people, and political opponents. Enforcement of morality laws, arbitrary detention, and torture. Kurdish and Arab minorities face ethnic discrimination.

Yemen:
Armed conflict, widespread human rights violations by all parties. Houthi persecution of journalists, women, Sunni tribes, and religious minorities. Recruitment of child soldiers, arbitrary detention, and risk for returnees.

Palestine:
Political repression in both Gaza and the West Bank. Human rights defenders, journalists, women, and LGBT individuals face systematic pressure and discrimination. Ongoing risk from Israeli and internal actors.

Lebanon:
Political instability, sectarian violence, discrimination against refugees (Syrians, Palestinians), LGBT persecution, and lack of protection for victims of domestic violence. Arbitrary detention and torture documented.

Jordan:
Limitations on freedom of expression, political surveillance, gender-based violence, and lack of legal protection for LGBT people. Syrian refugees face discrimination and risk of refoulement.

Saudi Arabia:
Suppression of dissent, severe restrictions on freedom of religion and expression. Arbitrary detention, torture, and state persecution of Shia Muslims, feminists, human rights activists, and LGBT individuals.
