The workshop is delivered by leading counsel, Mavelyn Vidal. It will run from 4-6pm and will be extremely practical, packed with tips to help all manner of lawyers and advisors deliver the best outcomes for their clients. The small group size will benefit delegates who will have ample opportunity to engage with the trainer and get the most out of a session, as well as an occasion for networking. At the end of the workshop delegates will have gained an improved understanding and increased confidence.

About the trainer: Mavelyn is a barrister at Haris Ali Solicitors. She specialises in asylum, immigration and human rights law, with 25 years' experience in these areas. She regularly trains caseworkers and solicitors in her specialist areas. She also taught immigration law as part of the Legal Practice Course for solicitors and taught undergraduates and post-graduates. She was counsel in a number of reported cases including JD (Congo) v. Secretary of State for the Home Department [2012] which concerned the 'second appeals tests'.

Workshop details: the workshop will look at: the Immigration Rules on private life, i.e. paragraph 276 ADE (1), an Introduction European Convention on Human Rights, essential principles of article 8 ECHR, medical cases and article 8 ECHR Paposhvili v Belgium and Rights of appeal in light of Kiarie and Byndloss.

Within the workshop there will be a consideration of leading judgments such as: Agyarko and Ikuga, R (on the applications of) v Secretary of State for the Home Department [2017] UKSC 11 and KO (Nigeria) & Ors v Secretary of State for the Home Department (Respondent) [2018] UKSC 53.

Objectives: to have a sound working knowledge of key aspects of private life under the rules, and family and private life under article 8 of the ECHR
