Coalition Against Trafficking in Women (CATW)

The Coalition Against Trafficking in Women-International (CATW) is a non-governmental organization that promotes women's human rights by working internationally to combat sexual exploitation in all its forms. Founded in 1988, CATW was the first international non-governmental organization to focus on human trafficking, especially sex trafficking of women and girls. Their library includes - Articles, Best Practices, CATW Coalition Report, International Agreements, Legislation, Prostitution Law Reform, Reports. Their online Factbook on Global Sexual Exploitation (1999) at: contains basic statistics and details for individual countries.


UNICEF Innocenti Research Centre

The UNICEF Innocenti Research Centre has an online database on child trafficking here which can be easily searched. Choosing a country from the drop down menu called 'geographic descriptors' pulls up many relevant news items, articles and reports on child trafficking in that country and is a useful resource.


End Child Prostitution, Child Pornography and Trafficking of Children for Sexual Purposes (ECPAT)

ECPAT is a network of organisations and individuals working together to eliminate the commercial sexual exploitation of children. It seeks to encourage the world community to ensure that children everywhere enjoy their fundamental rights free from all forms of commercial sexual exploitation. The site has very useful reports and news items and links. ECPAT UK

ECPAT UK is a leading children's rights organisation that is part of the ECPAT International network and campaigns against the commercial sexual exploitation of children in the UK and on its international aspects.
It represents a coalition of leading UK organisations working for the protection of children's rights, which are: Anti-Slavery International, NSPCC, Save the Children UK, The Children's Society, UNICEF UK, Jubilee Campaign and World Vision UK. It carries out monitoring and research as well as providing training and capacity building on safeguarding trafficked children. The site contains research reports on trafficking in the UK and also country briefing papers on trafficking in several countries.


Anti-Slavery International

Anti-Slavery International, founded in 1839, is the world's oldest international human rights organisation and the only charity in the United Kingdom to work exclusively against slavery and related abuses. It works at local, national and international levels to eliminate the system of slavery around the world. As a research and campaigning organisation, Anti-Slavery International has built up a large collection of reference materials housed in the library at London offices. International Organization for Migration

Established in 1951, IOM is the leading inter-governmental organization in the field of migration and works closely with governmental, intergovernmental and non-governmental partners. With 120 member states, a further 20 states holding observer status and offices in over 100 countries, IOM is dedicated to promoting humane and orderly migration for the benefit of all. Interpol. Children and Human Trafficking.

The main aim of Interpol is to promote the widest possible mutual assistance between all criminal police authorities. It provides a structured platform for raising awareness, building competence and identifying best practices within law enforcement worldwide. It is a forum for exchanging information on current trends and investigations. Trafficking in human beings is considered one of the top priorities at Interpol. Useful publications.

The Polaris Project

Polaris Project is a leading international organization combating human trafficking and modern-day slavery. Based in the United States and Japan, we bring together community members, survivors, and professionals to fight trafficking and slavery in the spirit of a modern-day Underground Railroad.


The 'Honour Crimes' Project

The 'Honour Crimes' Project is jointly co-ordinated by CIMEL (Centre of Islamic and Middle Eastern Laws) at the School of Oriental and African Studies, London University and INTERIGHTS (International Centre for the Legal Protection of Human Rights). In its first year (July 2000 - June 2001), the Project undertook several activities including:

  • undertaking a 'mapping exercise' to identify the work done and currently being undertaken to address the issue of 'honour' crimes globally. The 'mapping exercise' has resulted in a Directory available on this website and by hard copy via CIMEL on request;
  • preparing an Annotated Bibliography, containing over 100 entries in English, in Arabic and Portuguese which can also be viewed at the INTERIGHTS website and at the following address: http://www1.umn.edu/humanrts/bibliog/honourintro.html
  • compiling Statutory Provisions on Crimes of 'Honour' in the Penal Codes of Arab states;
  • compiling extracts of international human rights documents on 'honour' crimes, including 'honour' killings and forced marriage;
The Center for Reproductive Rights

The Center for Reproductive Rights (formerly the Center for Reproductive Law and Policy) is a nonprofit legal advocacy organization dedicated to promoting and defending women's reproductive rights worldwide. Has helpful factsheets, reports and news items relevant to reproductive rights - including forced marriage issues.


Q Web Women's Empowerment Base - online articles search. Contains on its 'Resources' page an online thematic database of articles and reports including on Trafficking and Gender-Based Violence.


Asylum Aid

Asylum Aid is an independent, national charity assisting refugees in the UK. It helps the most vulnerable and disadvantaged people seeking asylum in the UK by giving them free legal advice and representing them in their asylum application. Has a Refugee Women's Resource Project (RWRP)which provides representation and research on gender and asylum issues. The organisation's publications page contains research reports and the monthly Women’s Asylum News bulletin on gender issues.

International Relations and Security Network (ISN)

Based in Zurich, Switzerland, at the Center for Security Studies (CSS) at ETH Zurich (Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich), the ISN- drawn from various disciplines, including the humanities, the social sciences, and information and communication technology - engage in research projects. Some of these relate to trafficking.


The Refugee Law Reader

The Refugee Law Reader, which is the first comprehensive on-line model curriculum for the study of the complex and rapidly evolving field of international asylum and refugee law. As a 'living book', The Reader has been updated to reflect the important developments in international and European refugee law that have occurred since its first on-line publication in April 2004. European Country of Origin Information Network (ecoi.net)

Provides up-to-date and publicly available country of origin information with a special focus on the needs of asylum lawyers, refugee counsels and persons deciding on claims for asylum and other forms of international protection. Access to information is facilitated by a comprehensive search tool and Topics & Issues files, offering thematically structured information on asylum-relevant topics and issues for a set of focus countries.

Refworld

Refworld is the leading source of information necessary for taking quality decisions on refugee status. Refworld contains a vast collection of reports relating to situations in countries of origin, policy documents and positions, and documents relating to international and national legal frameworks. The information has been carefully selected and compiled from UNHCR's global network of field offices, Governments, international, regional and non-governmental organizations, academic institutions and judicial bodies.


International Helsinki Federation for Human Rights (IHF)

The International Helsinki Federation for Human Rights (IHF) is an international, nongovernmental organization constituted by national Helsinki Committees and Cooperating Organizations in the participating States of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE). The IHF seeks to promote compliance with the human rights provisions of the Helsinki Final Act and its follow-up documents, with international legal obligations undertaken in the Council of Europe (CoE) and the United Nations (UN), and with human rights norms promoted by the European Union (EU). The IHF mandate is to protect and strengthen civil society groups that monitor and report on human rights issues from a non-partisan perspective, and to bring them together on a common international platform. The IHF represents its affiliates on the international political level and in the media, supports and assists their human rights monitoring and advocacy activities, and disseminates documentation based on their research.

Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre (IDMC)

The Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre (IDMC), established in 1998 by the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC), is the leading international body monitoring conflict-induced internal displacement worldwide.
Through its work, the Centre contributes to improving national and international capacities to protect and assist the millions of people around the globe who have been displaced within their own country as a result of conflicts or human rights violations.

At the request of the United Nations, the Geneva-based IDMC runs an online database providing comprehensive information and analysis on internal displacement in some 50 countries. Based on its monitoring and data collection activities, the Centre advocates for durable solutions to the plight of the internally displaced in line with international standards. The IDMC also carries out training activities to enhance the capacity of local actors to respond to the needs of internally displaced people (IDPs). In its work, the Centre cooperates with and provides support to local and national civil society initiatives.


World Health Organisation

WHO is the directing and coordinating authority for health within the United Nations system. It is responsible for providing leadership on global health matters, shaping the health research agenda, setting norms and standards, articulating evidence-based policy options, providing technical support to countries and monitoring and assessing health trends. The Office for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE)

The OSCE documents library contains materials dating back to the set-up of the Conference for Security and Co-operation in Europe, in 1975. The OSCE has set up and maintains a number of online databases on various specialized subjects. The OSCE Office for Democratic Initiatives and Human Rights undertakes anti-trafficking work. International Labour Organization: Project to Combat Trafficking in Children and Women. Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific Preventing the trafficking and labor exploitation of children and young people is an obligation of ILO members which have ratified Convention 182 on the Worst Forms of Child Labor.


AccessAsia NBR's AccessAsia is the world's clearinghouse for information on contemporary Asian affairs and policy-related issues. The project maintains several databases, including a specialist database that tracks the expertise and current research of leading experts on contemporary Asian affairs


Colombia University: Africa Studies

Virtual library: Columbia University's collection of African Studies Internet Resources is an on-going compilation of electronic bibliographic resources and research materials on Africa available on the global Internet, created under the purview of the African Studies Department of Columbia University Libraries. Electronic resources from Africa are organized by region and country. All materials are arranged to encourage an awareness of authorship, type of information, and subject. The scope of the collection is research-oriented, but it also provides access to other web sites with different or broader missions. Beginning in early 1999, the site became the "official" African Studies web site for the World Wide Web Virtual Library.


Africa Confidential

Africa Confidential is one of the longest-established specialist publications on Africa, It often has useful in depth news on significant political, economic and security developments across the continent.


The Middle East Media Research Institute (MEMRI)

The Middle East Media Research Institute (MEMRI) produces original analysis based on Middle Eastern media and distributes them, free of charge, by fax and email. Palestinian Refugee ResearchNet

Palestinian Refugee ResearchNet is a non-partisan project devoted to the dissemination of ideas and scholarly information, in an effort to foster scholarly collaboration, policy research, and innovative thinking on the Palestinian refugee issue. PRRN is maintained by the Inter-University Consortium for Arab and Middle Eastern Studies (Montreal), with the support of the Arts Computing Network, McGill University, the International Development Research Centre and the Canadian International Development Agency.
