BBC News reported yesterday that a new Conservative campaign group, Conservatives for Managed Migration, is urging David Cameron to drop his pledge to cut net migration to tens of thousands.

The group claims the support of up to 20 Conservative MPs and was organised by Mark Field, the MP for the Cities of London and Westminster.

Field said that Conservatives for Managed Migration aims to promote "calm and rational debate" around immigration.

The Telegraph noted that Field said the Conservative's approach to immigration makes non-white voters feel like they are a "mistake".

In a speech to launch the group, Field said: "Second, the relentless focus on immigration by the Conservative Party seems to the outsider to border on near-obsession. The implicit message to the electorate is that my Party is fundamentally hostile to those who were not born here. Indeed that the presence of settled migrant communities has been an historical mistake. This in spite of the fact that many immigrants to Britain demonstrate just the kind of enterprise and family values that should make them natural Tory voters."
