Adding your own documents or text to a bundle

How to add your own documents/text to your bundle

This page contains information on how you can add your own materials to your bundle (see the end of the page for a practical example).

You can format and add your own Word documents (or text copied to a Word document) to your bundle in Microsoft Word before running the 'Bundle-Maker'. Provided you have correctly formatted the document or text you have added, it will be appear as an entry in the table of contents when you run the 'Bundle-Maker'. (You can 'Undo' a bundle if you would like to add material to a bundle that has already been created - see the main help guide for more information).

Note: If you wish to add material to a bundle that cannot be imported or copied into Word, please see http://www.ein.org.uk/members/bundle/help/addprinted.shtml for information on incorporating separate printed documents within a bundle.

You should have a reasonable knowledge of Word heading styles, how to use them and how to know what styles are contained in a document if you wish to format and add your own documents. You may wish to see the Microsoft Word help section for more detailed instructions on using heading styles.

The Bundle-Maker will put a page break before every item in Heading 1 style and add items in Heading 1 to the table of contents.

Therefore, if you want to add your own Word documents or text, give the document or text a 'title' (i.e. what you want to appear in the table of contents) and format the title in Heading 1 style.

To make an item 'Heading 1', simply select it and use the dropdown 'Style' box displayed on the Microsoft Word Formatting toolbar.

Alternately, use the 'Format' menu, select 'Style...' and from the list of Styles select Heading 1 and click the 'Apply' button.

Copy and paste the document to your bundle before running the Bundle-Maker.

If incorrect or unwanted items appear in your bundle table of contents after running the 'Bundle-Maker', it will be due to the fact that those incorrect or unwanted items are in Heading 1 style *. Remember that you can undo your bundle, correct any styles and recreate your bundle.

Therefore, you will need to make sure that Heading 1 style does not occur elsewhere in the document or text you add (e.g. try and use 'normal' style for the main text). Sometimes Microsoft Word will automatically use styles as you type (to prevent this, on the Microsoft Word 'Tools' menu, click 'AutoCorrect', and then click the 'AutoFormat As You Type' tab; under 'Automatically as you type', clear the 'Define styles based on your formatting' check box).

Tip: If you are unsure of which items are in which styles within your document, view your document in Word Outline View. Using 'List and Re-Order' from the 'Bundle-Maker' menu will switch your document to Outline view and show only the items in Heading 1, i.e. each item shown here will be added as a separate item in the table of contents in the bundle. If any item is incorrect, select it and change the style so that it is no longer in Heading 1 (e.g. you may wish to change it to 'Normal' style). To return the document to the 'normal' view, simply use the Word 'View' menu and select your preferred view - either 'Page/Print Layout' or 'Normal'.

Please also note that items in 'H1' style will be converted to Heading 1 style by the Bundle-Maker. You may find items in H1 style if you copy and paste text from a web page.

* If Heading 2 style items appear in your bundle, please update your copy of the Bundle-Maker template by going to http://www.ein.org.uk/members/bundle/download.shtml and downloading and installing the lastest version of the Bundle-Maker.Earlier versions added Heading 2 styles to the table of contents, the current version does not.
