Logging in
You now log in to EIN by entering your details on the webpage rather than a popup. When you are logged out, the top right-hand corner of the screen provides a space for you to enter your username and password. Or you can go to the log in page here. You stay logged in until you manually choose to log out (click here if you have forgotten your password).
Navigating the site
We have tried to keep a familiar look and feel to the new website, so finding your way around should not prove too confusing. The main menu at the top of every page allows quick and easy navigation between the main areas of the website (case law, country reports, legislation and resources). The areas themselves have a familiar layout.
The left-hand menus feature links to secondary areas of the website (such as general news, jobs and events) and signed-in users will also see a personal menu that provides links to personal content (account details, bundles and messages).
Note that the blue blocks (with a right/down facing triangle) used on the new EIN website can be expanded and collapsed. Try it out below...
Searching content
Searching on the new EIN website is much improved. It provides a much more intelligent and much more familiar 'Google-style' search. Advanced options should rarely be needed for most searches.
The search menu is always available using the main menu on the top of the page. Simply click on the SEARCH itself to search the entire EIN site or allow the menu to dropdown and select the individual database you wish to search (Case law, Country reports, Legislation or Resources).
A full guide is available here but, briefly, simply enter your search query and search. If needed, you can then use the options on the right-hand side of the search page to sort and/or filter your results.
You can sort by relevancy or date (click the date twice to switch between newest and oldest first). You can filter by various options, such as EIN index terms, court level (for cases), or countries (for country reports). If you search the entire EIN website, you can filter by content type (e.g., case law only or legislation only or only both). You just click the relevant option within a filter to select that option and you can then click the (-) next to a selected filter option to deselct that option.
Finding specific content
The new search also makes finding specific content much easier. It ranks words in a title much higher, so, for example, a search for 'Zambrano' or 'HM Iraq' will find the relevant cases, 'tribunal procedure rules 2005' will find the relevant legislation and 'Danish report Somalia' will find the relevant country report.
Just enter some words to describe what you are looking for and search (results will be sorted by relevancy by default). In most cases, the search will provide excellent results, putting the specific content near the very top of your search results.
EIN index terms
EIN index terms are now 'clickable' - just click an index terms to search by that terms (EIN index terms appear at the bottom of content on a page - i.e., scroll to the end of a case or country report to see the index terms). The new glossary of index terms available here is also clickable - click any term to search for that term.
You can also search by index terms by entering the index term in the advanced options on the search page (just begin typing and the autocomplete will match the index term - you can read more about how the autocomplete works here).
Bundle
The bundle remains familiar - you create individual bundles, add items to your bundles (using the 'ADD TO BUNDLE' link at the top of a page) then view your full bundle and copy and paste to Microsoft Word.
The 'bundle box' appears in its familiar location on the right-hand side of a page (but can now be expanded or collapsed).
You can now add case law, country reports, legislation and resources to a bundle.
We have added a toolbar to the 'bundle box' and the buttons on the toolbar allow you to create, edit, export and delete your bundles. Note that the old EIN website 'View active bundle' command is now a toolbar button to 'EXPORT BUNDLE'. That provides a single page of all your bundle items and you then copy and paste that to Microsoft Word.
The new bundle toolbar buttons fully explained are:
NEW BUNDLE - click to go to the page where you create a new bundle
EDIT CURRENT BUNDLE - click to go to the page where you can edit and rearrange the items in your bundle (the equivalent of the old 'Organise bundles' page)
EXPORT BUNDLE - click to export the items in your content bundle to a single webpage (this button is the equivalent of the old 'View active bundle' link)
DELETE BUNDLE - click this to delete your current bundle (you will be prompted first to avoid accidentally deleting a bundle)
EXCERPT MODE - this switches excerpt mode on and off (when 'on' the button shows a yellow excerpt icon, when 'off' the icon is greyed out). Excerpt mode is similar to the old website, but you now get a popup window when you select text and you can add multiple, separate excerpts, all with an editable title (see the guide here for full details of the new excerpt function).
The full bundle help guide is available here.
Forums
Forums are available here and are a new feature on the EIN website (replacing the old message boards). Anyone familiar with a standard Internet forum should find the EIN forums very easy to use.
The forums are intended to provide a place for members to ask and answer queries, and to discuss matters relating to immigration. We encourage all members to visit and use the forums.
Please note that EIN forums are private and can only be viewed by EIN members. Non-members cannot view any forum posts. Please also note that your EIN profile name will appear next to any forum posts you create.
