  • This is the first of three Training Lectures given by Mark Symes, on the subject of advocacy before the IAA, organised by HJT Research, producers of the ICCID country information database on the EIN. The next two lectures are:
  • 'The Refugee Convention and ECHR - The Fundamentals and the Future', on Tuesday 6th November 2003, followed by
  • "Developments in Refugee Convention and ECHR Case Law" on Wednesday 19th November 2003, all at the Law Society in Chancery Lane.

Objectives

Course One aims to familiarize practitioners with, and reinforce existing knowledge of, methods of high quality asylum appeal preparation, with the object of ensuring efficient, prompt and impressive preparation and presentation of appeals before the Immigration Appellate Authority.

To this end the course also incorporates an essential introduction to basic principles of evidence and advocacy.

2.1 Principles regarding Evidence in the Immigration Appellate Authority
2.2 Conduct of proceedings before the Tribunal

3.2 Open discussion on the implications of reform for effective case preparation
